PI Zero w First setup

Image sdcard like this, /dev/sdb may need changing on your system.

https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/installation/installing-images/linux.md

sudo dd bs=4M if=2018-06-27-raspbian-stretch-lite.img of=/dev/sdb status=progress conv=fsync

The foundation has provided a mechanism to enable SSH connection and configure WiFi at first system startup. Simply create two configuration files specific to the root of the SD card.

The two files idea did not work for me

I used this guide:-

https://medium.com/@DavidMaitland/raspberry-pi-zero-headless-setup-92fb72daf88d

Edit the /etc/network/interfaces file:

  sudo nano etc/network/interfaces

Find this block in the file:

  allow-hotplug wlan0
  iface wlan0 inet manual
  wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Then change it to this:

  auto wlan0
  allow-hotplug wlan0
  iface wlan0 inet dhcp
  wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Setup the WiFi connection and passkey. Edit the file /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf.

 sudo nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Add this to the end:

network={
ssid="my network name"
psk="my network password"
proto=RSN
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP
auth_alg=OPEN
}

enable ssh by adding an empty file called ssh to the root of the sdcard
